Commitment!

“The only thing worse than training employees and losing them is not training them and keeping them” – Zig Ziglar.

Occasionally I’m asked if I can guarantee the results of a sales team after they attend a seminar and my reply is, “It is difficult for me to guarantee the application of the content presented and the commitment of a salesperson to their career success and professional development after they attend a seminar.”

Commitment is about applying what we know.  Often we know, but don’t.  We know how to make cold calls, but don’t.  We know we should exercise more, but don’t.  We know we should eat better, drink less, but don’t.

What are we waiting for?  Why can’t we decide to start and just apply what we know we should do now?

It boils down to one word; commitment.  How’s your commitment? [Read more…]

Be Hamlet

Every year the students in the drama class at Lincoln High School perform a one-act play for the student body. Students have their choice on what play and scene they want to act in. Johnny, a senior this year, wanted to do a scene from Hamlet. He was shy by nature, but one of the better actors in class, with aspirations for the theater after graduation. Johnny studied his part and knew his lines. After weeks of preparation, it was time for the practice run in front of the drama class before performing in front of friends, family and the entire student body. [Read more…]

I Got My Lucky Socks On!

Ever feel like you can take on the world when your head is focused on a positive outcome?  There, that’s the secret; being focused on the positive.  What are you focused on when you “feel” like a winner?

When we let our thoughts determine our feelings, we are making a conscious choice of being proactive of the positive.  This requires knowledge, preparation, focus and execution.  Often we can feel distracted under the pressure of a new environment or unfamiliar situation.  When we focus on the positive versus giving faith in the negative (fear, doubt and uncertainty), we increase our chances of a favorable outcome. You have the right, but do you have the ability to be successful?

The first American woman that flew into space, Dr. Sally Ride, passed away during the Olympics.  That day I heard an interview where a reporter asked another female astronaut, “Why are there not more women in the space program?”  The woman replied with, “Women have just as much a right to be in space as men do.”  I don’t disagree with that, nor do most other people, but a right is not the same as ability. John Wooden: the difference between winning and succeeding

Let’s get back to school, back to business and back on track.  As you prepare, check out this simply profound message.

“I had three rules, pretty much, that I stuck with practically all the time. I’d learned these prior to coming to UCLA, and I decided they were very important. One was — never be late. Never be late. Later on I said certain things –I had — players, if we’re leaving for somewhere, had to be neat and clean. There was a time when I made them wear [Read more…]

Daniel Kahneman: The riddle of experience vs. memory

Finally a video that describes the source of what we do and don’t do.  Daniel Kahneman explains the past experiences that are summarized into memories that define our beliefs.

When we ask ourselves if our beliefs are real, we would all say yes.  But when asked of they are still true, our answers may require some thought.  And we need to base our actions (behaviors) on thought.  This is how we are going to get the results – by choice –  we want in life.

Pilot in Command

Since I was 11 years old, I have wanted to be a pilot. Unfortunately, I was told I could never achieve that goal because my eyes are so bad. Though the barrier was not true, I maintained that belief until the fall of 1996. At the age of 30, I decided I was no longer going to subscribe to that belief. It was real, but no longer true. How would you complete this sentence? “I could sell more if only I could….”

The most important part of this question is “I”.  We are in control of our actions and we own the outcome of everything we do and don’t do.  This is the only way we can change and grow.  If we blame others, and never take responsibility, we have to ask ourselves; who is in control of our life?

Change occurs in 4 areas; conceptual, technical, behavioral and attitudinal, that can be divided into 2 halves; technical/conceptual and behavioral/attitudinal. [Read more…]
